Robert Mapplethorpe

Robert Mapplethorpe, American Photographer, died on this day in 1989 due to AIDS complications. Mapplethorpe initially began taking Polaroids to incorporate into mixed-media work which eventually led to a solo show entitled “Polaroids” in 1973. Soon after, Mapplethorpe began shooting his friends (artists, musicians, socialites, porn stars, members of S&M underground) with a Hasselblad medium format camera. Mapplethorpe’s work often caused controversy due to the homosexual nature and nudity.
